When I write these things for your presumed edification and enjoyment, I rarely actually know the people Im writing about; my opinions are generally borne of a lifetime of reading and listening to and about those people, most of which Ill never know or meet. However, in this case, I am proud and honored to say that I actually am acquainted with this fellow, this Tommy Womack, whos celebrating a birthday today as well. Taking off from the what-the-hell Government Cheese days, in which he honed his songwriting chops, Tommy has done very well for himself, writing in an often wry, often sentimental, but usually always clever and sharply observed style, and also managing to work the essential sleight of hand that encompasses providing memorable, even hummable melodies and an engaging delivery to his musings and observations. If youve never seen Tommy perform, just him and his guitar and that hat, then youve missed out on a very enjoyable experience. Long may he (and the Cheese, all of whom are swell fellas and good musicians in their own right) run. Nice clip here of one of his best songs.
