When Im starting out, I often make random stabs at storyline until I actually figure out what the story is. I call this stab: The Archeology of Silas Decker. Decker lost his kitchen in the 1980s, or at least, everything drowning the room out of usability was from that decade. Joshua knew that the era was before the internet but he never realized how much of spam used to come in envelopes. Publishers Clearinghouse alone filled three garbage bags. At that time, Decker had subscribed to a dozen newspapers and several business magazines. Several were in Chinese or Japanese – Joshua didnt know enough of the languages to tell them apart. The man wasnt interested in Sports or the Classifieds, as those sections were in pristine condition. The world and local news had been open, folded and refolded in the process of being thoroughly read. Now and then stories were ripped out and apparently save elsewhere as there were no newspaper bits floating in amount the other paper clutter. Decker liked novels. There were books everywhere with bookmarks tucked among their pages. Or at least, Joshua was fairly sure that why each book had at least stray piece of paper tucked somewhere close to the end of the novel. Decker apparently used whatever was at hand to mark his place. Junk mail. Utility bills (making Joshua wonder if the man ever actually paid his bills.) And amazing enough, postcards from Elises grandfather (assuming he was E. Grigori that traveled the world.) Junk mail was bagged. Newspapers were stacked for recycling. Books had their bookmarks removed and stacked by the door to be taken to a room more fitting to reading than the kitchen.
