When Im working on a new vista, I like to work on three canvases - TopicsExpress

When Im working on a new vista, I like to work on three canvases at once. Each canvas will go in a certain direction and then something makes me pause. I question how much (or little) detail - or a certain aspect of the coloring - or proportions in the overall composition. Thats when the second canvas really helps. I can take the question and try out an answer there. Which will pose a few more questions. And so we come to the third canvas. Here, I was exploring a simplification of the entire scene - enlarging the foreground, keeping the detail in the distant form of Soberanes Point, allowing the sky to stay soft and transitional between tattered clouds and warm blues. I will confess that on my way to these three 4x5 expressions of Soberanes Point I did 30 smaller works -5x7 and up. Many of them I scraped down and have now painted over - or will soon - as the experiments just didnt work. But I know that one day a new idea will pop up and one of those failures will create the perfect underpainting for the next idea. Painters know - the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know. Please, Lord, just a little more time to figure it out!
