When Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu throws the term Mutual recognition around it is important to consider the following facts: 1. The PLO already officially recognised Israel and then PLO chairman Yasser Arafat wrote: “The PLO recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security,” 2. Israel has only ever given recognition to the PLO in terms of recognising the right of the PLO to represent the Palestinians. 3. Israel has ensured that recognition remains asymmetrical to this very day. This means that is uses the position of being the stronger, dominant party to the conflict in order to dictate terms and mislead the public & international community. 4. Mutual recognition is a term that can mean multiple things in international diplomacy and peace building. Recognising the rights of others for instance, or the narratives of others etc.
