When Ive said ignore the behavior, dont ignore the child, there is another dynamic equally at work. Generally, misbehavior, if not interpreted correctly, will lead to a parental feeling of fear, which will give way to guilt or blame, and in some instances, a deeper sense of shame. When this occurs the parent is unable to ignore the behavior because it becomes the threat to the negative feelings being experienced, thus the focus on eliminating the behavior. This internally motivated desire speaks greatly to our need as parents to mindfully listen to the roots of our own reactions, explore our history and discover the painful connections to our childrens behaviors so that we may be present to them in the moment when they need it the most.
