When Jesus spoke of “taking up our cross daily,” His point was not just about some overt suffering, but rather about absolute surrender. He wasn’t promising daily pain and heartbreak – but rather demanding that we stop deciding our loyalty to Him based on the events of our life. If we surrender each day to Him, living today for His purposes and His pleasure – the events – be they sweet or sour – will be lived with the assurance that He knows what He is doing, and He knows my role in it all (even if I do not). The acts of a surrendered life radiate the Light inside of us, as much in the time of joyful celebrations as through weighty trials. The events are irrelevant – the surrender is the point He was making. (Reflections on discipleship).
