When Jonah received a call from God that he didn’t want to - TopicsExpress

When Jonah received a call from God that he didn’t want to answer, he fled as far away as he could go: to what was considered the ends of the earth at that time. Running away to Tarshish brought Jonah comfort. The idea of leaving God’s call behind in his homeland gave him solace, so much so that he even went down into the boat to take a nice nap. However, since we know the story, we also know the futility of Jonah’s escape from God. God pursued Jonah to the ends of the earth, eventually bringing the wayward prophet back to Him and into the calling He meant for Jonah all along. Do you see similarities between yourself and Jonah? Sometimes it is more comfortable to run from God than to run toward Him. We live in a world with so many opportunities for escape, and they are calling out to us. What are some of the things you’re tempted to run toward as an escape from God’s call to relationship with Him? Is it a busy social calendar? Your technology? Your career and accomplishments? The pursuit of relationships? Spend some time asking God what those things may be and what His will is concerning them. Prayer: God, open my eyes to the things that I use to run away from You. At the same time, open my eyes to to the things You are calling me to. Thank you for continuing to pursue me even when I choose to distract myself from You. Lord, give me the strength to run the race of faith with my eyes fixed on You.
