When Kim & I first started performing together, it was kind of a fluke. We hadnt been married very long, but Kim had been bugging me to start a band together for what seemed like forever. I did not want to do it; I thought it was a terrible idea. But then June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash both died within months of each other, and Lees Liquor Lounge put together a tribute show to them that my band at the time, Accident Clearinghouse, couldnt play. I really wanted to do the benefit, though, so I signed us up as... I had to make up a name... uhm... the Roe Family Singers! We sang Jackson, If I Were a Carpenter, and, in a tribute to Junes mama Maybelle Carter of the original Carter Family, Hello, Stranger. To be honest, we were pretty so-so. Our next show was another tribute, again at Lees, this time for Hank Williams. We played more shows, and were just about to throw in the towel when we met Charlie Parr. Charlie gave us a TON of slots opening for him, all over Minnesota, and it gave us the encouragement we needed to keep going. In 2005 our friends Rob & Leah Rule from the Turf Club invited us to do another tribute show, this one for Neil Young, at the newly reopened 331 Club. We liked the place, and soon after started a weekly residence there. We did it for a few months as a duo before bringing on Adam Wirtzfeld on the musical saw. After he joined, the rest of the band slowly accrued around us, until we reached the 10-piece behemoth that still plays there every Monday. So its a lot of fun to play shows like the one were doing this Friday night, May 2, at Ginkgo Coffeehouse. Itll be just the two of us--like it used to be all of the time--playing round-robin with our friends Dana Thompson and Brett Larson, for House of Mercy First Friday showcase! Its ALL AGES, starts at 7 PM, and is FREE (though we encourage donations!) https://facebook/events/262560560593615/?ref=22
