When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem - TopicsExpress

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the peoples chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied . . . Matthew 2:3-5 If anyone should have known that God had come to earth it should have been the ones who already professed to know Him. The chief priests and teachers of the law knew all of the prophecies describing the Messiahs birth. They knew He would come from the smallest clan and be born in an insignificant town. Yet, He arrived right under their noses and they missed it. How could that be? How could the people who had been watching for hundreds of years to see God come to earth miss it? Maybe they did not miss it, instead maybe they refused it. Maybe they were so comfortable in their pious religion and their rules that they had convinced themselves they no longer needed God to save them. Maybe God coming to earth just reminded them that they were imperfect, sinful and unworthy. Maybe they had built a life around religious activity and it frightened them to think that God wanted more from them. Maybe they just didnt want to stop trying to impress everyone around them with how good they were. Maybe they just could not fathom being put on the same level as all those other sinners. Maybe Gods people did not receive Him because they did not really understand how much they needed Him. Maybe they knew so much in their heads that it got in the way of their hearts. Its a sober reminder to me. Sometimes my knowing ABOUT God gets in the way of my KNOWING God unless I admit that I am hopelessly lost without Him.
