When Lei was a child, she was playing with her friends when a landmine exploded. She lost her left arm. During her life, she’s faced other obstacles: she dropped out of school because her family couldn’t afford the fees, she lost her father and she had to work in exchange for food and clothes. Through Plan’s Empowering Families Project Lei is now raising pigs which she sells pigs for $50 each. She tells us “we have 11 pigs from the one pig we received a year ago!” She is known in her village for being the best pig-raiser around. “I don’t want to show off, but neighbours often say ‘you only have one arm, but you are so good at what you do! I have my own techniques which I use, but I don’t want to give away my secrets! I learn from other people bit-by-bit. Knowledge is more important than money.” This Christmas, you can buy a family in Cambodia a pig which they can raise and breed.
