When Liszt was a young boy of 11, his teacher Carl Czerny took him - TopicsExpress

When Liszt was a young boy of 11, his teacher Carl Czerny took him to meet the great Beethoven. Once Liszt had sat at the piano and rattled off a short but impressive piece, Beethoven asked the young boy if he could play a fugue by Bach. The young Liszt completed the fugue with finesse, and Beethoven responded with a challenge: ‘Could you also transpose the Fugue at once into another key?’ he asked. Without hesitation, the young boy played through the transposed fugue brilliantly and, at the final chord, looked up to Beethoven: “The Masters darkly glowing gaze was fixed upon me penetratingly. Yet suddenly a benevolent smile broke up his gloomy features … ‘May I play something of yours now?’ I asked cheekily. Beethoven nodded with a smile. I played the first movement of his C major Concerto. When I had ended, Beethoven seized both my hands, kissed me on the forehead and said gently: ‘Go! You are one of the fortunate ones! For you will give joy and happiness to many other people! There is nothing better or finer!’” To be one of those fortunate ones! … there is *nothing* I want more than that
