When Opportunity Knocks… Referrals are a big part of business but within the recruitment industry they are the bedrock of what our business is built on. Sometimes however we may be calling a referred candidate and after we have introduced ourselves all we hear at the other end of the line is the disconnect tone…. Believe me, this doesn’t happen to us that often but many professionals may have reactions such as being annoyed, scared, nervous or even angry of getting a phone call from a recruiter. As recruiters, we appreciate that people have different reactions depending on how busy their schedule is or whether they are in the middle of something such as working towards a tight deadline or having a meeting with the senior management. All those reasons will therefore impact how they response to the call from us. This is totally understandable. However, my advice would be to do your best to take the call and see it as a compliment and not an inconvenience. If the recruiter knows his/her market and it is a genuine referral they will be speaking to you about an opportunity that should be related to your field of expertise and interest. They will also be able to provide you with some market information and salary benchmarking and you never know whilst you might not be looking at that time further down the line there may be opportunities you would wish to hear about from that consultant.
