When Shane McColgan heard some people right in his own town were too poor to have a turkey dinner, he decided to do something about it. The second-grader said hes on a mission, as he reads off the list of food he hopes to fill 50 baskets with for Thanksgiving. I felt sad about them, said Shane. He said he was sad about families who might go without turkey and all the fixings. It started after Shane saw a commercial about starving kids all over the world. He asked me why there are hungry kids, and I told him that sometimes things happen and families dont have enough to eat. And he asked me if there were people like that in town, and I said unfortunately there were. Then he asked if he could change that. And I told him that he absolutely could, said Krystle McColgan, Shanes mother. His first idea didnt quite pan out. I said we should make everybody go to my grandmas house, said Shane. With moms help, Shane started the Shane Gives Thanks food drive. So far hes collected enough food for seven baskets through donations, gift cards and partnerships with local businesses. Its a wonderful thing he is doing. When you think of the list of food he wants, if he gets half of that he will do a wonderful job. And a lot of people will appreciate it, said Ron Delano, owner of Carver Jewelers, who has a Shane Gives Thanks donation box in his store. wcvb/news/7yearold-carver-boy-starts-holiday-food-drive-for-families/28090026
