When World War II began, the United States armed forces were small - TopicsExpress

When World War II began, the United States armed forces were small and unprepared for the global struggle which they were entering into. The US Navy was forced to buy much of what it needed in early 1942. Needed by the Navy were small district patrol crafts which could patrol in harbors and close to naval bases. This photograph shows the YP 556, the former motor yacht “fantasy” which was purchased by the Navy in September, 1942 for patrolling the shore line and harbor near New Bedford, Massachusetts. The yacht had been built in 1927 in City Island, New York and would be decommissioned and sold for scrap by the Navy in 1945.
