“When a child is abused, the conflicting sensations he experiences (pain, anger, humiliation, arousal) are too much for him. Rather than give the abuser the satisfaction of seeing his body react, the child shuts down and “leaves” his body. As a result, survivors often describe their abuse as if they’re watching a movie: ‘It was like I was up on the ceiling looking down at these things happening to some other child.
