When a disaster of large magnitude takes place either natural or man made, we should let the trained professionals handle the situation. What we should do is to give them maximum possible help by setting up an information centre in the vicinity, informing all the hospitals in the district to be ready to accept the victims, to provide water and food as much possible etc. We should not enter the core area to remove the victims unless they are drowning in the water and we are trained in saving a drowning person. We should leave this to trained personnel. If we plunge into the task of picking them up from the mess, we may involuntarily be causing more harm to the victims than help. It would be better not to enter the core area of the accident/disaster, if we suspect our relatives or friends could have been trapped there. If we do so, we may endanger the lives of many including our relatives by improper handling of the situation. We should never try to pick our favored victims using our vehicles or facilities from the spot. A lot of lives could have been lost by external, untrained people getting themselves into act in the current flood disaster in my country in Uttarkhand... Some people even used their private plane to remove ONLY their favoured victims....
