When a neighbor is in need, who bears responsibility to help? Increasingly in America, responsibility for taking care of others is placed at the foot of government. In a culture that speaks about desires in terms of needs, needs in terms of rights, and rights in terms of entitlements, government is considered obligated to provide citizens more and more. When people need assistance, therefore, the first place many think to turn is Washington, D.C.[1] This does not necessarily mean that people are less generous or willing to help others than they once were. Rather, it suggests that a cultural shift has taken place concerning where responsibility for others is seen to lie. Today, if neighbors or local congregations reach out to those in need, they are thought to act out of the voluntary kindness of their hearts. It is assumed that government takes care of the needy out of the obligation of responsibility. This lopsided conception of government responsibility is morally problematic, socially debilitating, and financially unsustainable. Government is not solely-- or even primarily--responsible for taking care of our neighbors. That responsibility belongs to each one of us as participants in a variety of relationships and overlapping communities. Charities have been hard pressed to raise funds to care for the people that their mission calls them to do because so many people feel as though charities have not used their money correctly. That is a different conversation for later. We will only change the world if we work together. So will give money, some will give their time and some will give of their talent. Some will give in all of the areas mentioned above. So many people want to get all they can from a charity and fail to realize that if we constantly give and never gain, we will not be any good for anyone in the future. I will tell you that One Spark is constantly adding new programs to better server the world. One Spark will be out of fund soon and then we will have to sit and pray that we get the funds we need to help people in need. I am going to be asking that people get a membership in the mission of One Spark. What is a membership? It means you believe in our mission and agree to invest 35.00 in our effort to make the world a better place for the next generation. What will I get when I buy a membership? You will get a membership certificate and a heart filled with love...because you have now help us fund all of our programs. I know many people will say that I am broke or I give to my church. That is great and we are not asking you to stop giving to where you are giving now. We are asking you to invest in our mission and in our programs.
