When all the votes are counted, nearly 50% of voters will have to - TopicsExpress

When all the votes are counted, nearly 50% of voters will have to come to terms with an outcome they didn’t want. There will be a need to come to terms with that. So here’s a small suggestion. When the vote comes in, make a resolution. Don’t give in to anger or frustration. Its democracy. Look at the 16 year olds welcomed into our democracy and asked to come in, take part, voice an opinion. Look at the thousands of people engaged in a political campaign for the first time. Look at the lids that have been lifted. Most importantly, don’t be triumphant. By all means celebrate but we’ve seen enough crowing, braying nonsense over the years. This isn’t a football match. Resolve to be part of the new Scotland, to make things work. Shake someone’s hand. In the words of the late, great Hamish Henderson, ‘be consequent’. Volunteer. Take part in society. Use the energy of a country capable of mobilizing 97% of its population to engage in a conversation about its future. Be creative. Start a company. Take a new part in society. This is a once in a generation opportunity to make a real difference. Do something positive immediately, as a statement of intent. Donate 10 quid to charity. Be a force for good. Be the Scotland with higher levels of volunteering. Be the Scotland with more entrepreneurs. Be the start-up Scotland. Judge every action of government, whichever government, by the maxim, ‘does this make Scotland better’? Hold them to account for the quality of life and encouragement to do good in this country, in this world, in this life. Whatever the outcome, well be ok.
