When approached for image usage its always fun to ask websites and publishers, So whats the compensation for the photographer? because most often, its fame and glory aka exposure. When I went to Coscto last night, they said they dont accept exposure but they do take debit cards. Websites and publishers are in business to sell magazines and/or advertising but I dont think the circle has been closed in the digital age to make it a win-win-win. The photographer i.e. source of the images should be included in the thought process. Its just assumed that having an image posted online is an awesome thing that drives traffic and leads to future photo shoots. I would says results of that assumption vary greatly. People are so used to having tons of free digital images (myself included) that the idea of actually paying for something is like ... really?! Of course for many in the scene its a labor of love and the goal is to break even and continue the creative process. Thats a different situation. There are different levels of business and different goals. Im mainly talking about for profit companies that have the budget but part of their business model is obtaining free content to drive the enterprise. There are some great businesses that have approached me about using my images and Im directing my efforts that way. Thats exciting news and helps build the future Hunny Bunny Empire and fund travel, photo shoots and more event photos.
