When asked how to respond or explain the sadistic killing of Australian visitor Christopher Lane by three young men of color, supposedly because they were bored, Reverend Al Sharpton had no specific rebuttal other than to say that the system worked, indicating their immediate capture, arrest, trial, and conviction which resulted in immediate incarceration. The media, of course, turned this into a spew fest, highlighting the publics immediate excoriating of Sharptons apparent hypocrisy and disapproval of the community in general. One has to wonder, now, if the horrific murder of Thomas Gilbert senior by his son, whose only primary motive was the decrease in his several hundred dollar monthly allowance, would invoke the same kind of inquest and criticism of Pat Lynch. I, of course, highly doubt it. But it would be nice and somewhat gratifying if it did happen. Because the truth is the system worked here too, and perfectly. An individual who would have otherwise been completely undetectable as a potential criminal in New York City was able to get away with murder before he could ever be considered dangerous, regardless of the fact he was in illegal possession of a firearm for an extended period of time. Even if this recent slow down in arrests wasnt happening, even if stop and frisk was still in force, Thomas Gilbert Jr. still would have gotten away with this. And therell be more Thomas Gilbert Jr.s in the future, sadly. The icing on this cake is that because we live in a capitalist society where people like Thomas Gilbert junior can use his exorbitant wealth and influence to hire top notch lawyers, the possibility exists that he could be acquitted for this obvious crime, just because he was able to pay for someone to warp the statutes of justice to suit his desired outcome. I mean, wouldnt this be a perfect time to reuse a red herring like the affluenza defense? Im sure Mr. Gilbert Jr. thinks so, and if he doesnt, his litigation will. God bless...
