When bad things happen to someone like getting diseases, natural - TopicsExpress

When bad things happen to someone like getting diseases, natural disasters and cities/states/countries getting destroyed, a series of unfortunate events, etc. and people respond by saying, it is probably because those people were in sin, they are only revealing their own sin of self righteousness. A good example of this would be the article below with Pat Robertsons infamous quote. Comments like this overlook the gravity of our own sin and assume our offenses arent as serious as others. It struck me last night as I was reading in the Old Testament about Jereboam, son of Nebat where the author says, he was more wicked than any man before him because he abandoned God and turned to idolatry. I struggle with idolatry ALL the time. Am I any less deserving of Gods holy judgment against my sin than all the vile sinners of Haiti or New Orleans or the person who worships Satan? No!!! I deserve nothing short of death and hell, just like everyone else. Jesus speaks to this very issue in Luke 13:1-5. Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” cnn/2010/US/01/13/haiti.pat.robertson/index.html
