When can we expect the result? The last election took place on Tuesday 20 September 2011. People started queuing as early as 2:00 hours in the morning, even though polling stations only opened at 6:00 hours. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) declared the late Michael Sata the winner shortly after 2:00 hours in the morning on Friday 23 September. He was sworn in at 14:40 hours the same day. He beat Rupiah Banda by 183,100 votes. In 2008, when Rupiah Banda won, the election took place on Thursday 30 October. Final results were released on Sunday 2 November. RB was sworn in in the afternoon - just two hours after the release of the results. He beat Sata by 35,209 votes. In 2006, the election took place on Thursday 28 September. The presidential result was announced late afternoon on Monday 2 October. Levy Mwanawasa was sworn in on 3 October. He beat Sata by 373,098 votes. This time the ECZ is using an electronic system to transfer votes, which theoretically will speed up the process. However, the election has never before been held at the height of the rainy season, which will slow down the process, as votes have to be transferred to tallying centres by helicopters.
