When did based on become based off of? The new expression is - TopicsExpress

When did based on become based off of? The new expression is not logical. When you put something on a foundation, you put it ON the foundation, ON the base. To put it OFF OF the foundation or base would be self-defeating. Not only is the change in the expression illogical, but I cannot imagine how it ever got started. Idioms are often illogical, but why shift to a new illogical one when you already have a perfectly logical expression that has been standard usage practically forever? I dont get it. I only started hearing the new expression a couple of years ago, and now suddenly my students write nothing else. Please, if you grade papers, help stamp this new-fangled barbarism out! Its spreading like a cancer.
