When electricity first became mainstream, people were so excited that they tried to electrify everything....whether it had any use or not....people had electric belts and coats with no purpose at all. Today some peoples excitement and zeal for government is similar. I had someone ask me why we have a Department of Defense and a Department of Commerce but no Department of Peace and Love or Department of Self Improvement. .....Just because peace, love and self improvement is a good thing....doesnt mean government is the best or only place to oversea it. Just as the Department of Education sounds like a great and wonderful thing....but really doesnt have much at all to do with educating people. In fact of the many thousands of its employees almost none actually meet any students. To a hammer all problems look like a nail....so Congress, overwhelmingly staffed by lawyers see new laws as a solution to every ill. Worse yet, citizens, especially a new generation who are growing up in an increasingly totalitarian and statist culture....see mother government as the first and best solution to societies problems. Dont like a certain kind of food or GMOs? The seek to have government ban it. Dont like the name of a team? The want government to force a change. Dont like the practices of a certain company? They seek a law. Its lazy and counterproductive and causes the inevitable unforeseen consequences. The best method for people who want change is to organize peaceful and freedom-based voluntary solutions.
