When fires break out in residential buildings, emergency responders rely on air masks to prevent those in danger from smoke inhalation. With the help of Hightstown’s Animal Welfare committee, the town’s fire department and first aid squad are now equipped to rescue dogs and cats in distress. “It doesn’t have to be a fire, but if we go to a scene and there’s an animal that needs help, we’ll have these and we’ll use them,” Jenkins said. “I’ll be the first one to try and save an animal. I love animals. I love safety first but animals second. A life is a life to me.” The community group purchased 24 masks, in three different sizes, from Pets America, a nonprofit organization based in San Diego. It donated them last night to emergency crews in a demonstration ceremony attended by Mayor Steve Kirson, members of council and other borough residents at the fire house on North Main Street. nj/mercer/index.ssf/2014/07/hightstown_community_group_donates_oxygen_masks_for_dogs_cats_to_fire_department.html
