When fishing, you need to focus on a few things: The bait, the hook, the line, the rod, the cast, the wait, the catch, keep or release, and feast. I said, The bait, the hook, the line, the rod, the cast, the wait, the catch, keep or release, and feast. You never know whats out in the pond, the river, the lake, the ocean, it can be whatever you see and what others dont. You can try to have a plan of action but for the most part fishing is patience. A syncopated rhythm of small bites until something grabs ahold of you and you fight to bring it in to you. Even if you dont want to keep it you have to look it in the eyes at least once or it will forever be the thing or the one that got away, and trust me, living in the past sometimes can hurt your future or motivate it. The bait, was his laugh. Raspy like maracas shaking, the hook was his smile, it could grab your attention from whatever you thought couldve been more important. The line pick a story, or joke just know that with it our pedigree is sought after laughter fills homes whenever he was in one. The Rod was his body, strong, my grandfather was short but sturdy and when the machines of this world tried to mangle him, surgery left his right hand in a claw shape so he could choke his competition or grab ahold of your heart. His cast was wide, I heard15 Kids at least, grandchildren in the 20s west to east almost 60 great grandchildren My Grandfather was like Johnny Appleseed, and when I look in the mirror I check out his roots. The Wait, 93 years on this troublesome earth Arkansas, California, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, he made magic when others only saw dirt, He was Earnest like his name, fought through the pain and shared his love with us all. Stubborn, but I didnt see that I only saw that he was a great & Grandfather uncle, brother, son, and more. I recall a few calls and visits but most of all I remember that they existed. While Im sure many of my family members will have more stories & memories than I you dont have mine. We took fishing trips, thats how we bonded. His right arm was my support as his left helped me cast deep into the unknown. We fished every time we were together except for his last visit to Detroit where we talked but it felt the same. While I wish there more fishing trips, it doesnt take away from the ones that we had. I may not have knew you the best but I met you, and will keep you in my heart and mind. While our time was short, and so were you, I always looked up to you. Thank you for being you. Our last talk let me know why My family could fight so well and why our jokes, passion, and anger cannot be contained. Nobody will walk over us because there might be a blade and more than fish can be filleted. This one small fish put up a battle, and we will feast in his honor. I will always remember our time together grandfather short and sweet. I wish there was one more fishing trip, and I know there will be, you taught me that the secret to fishing is patience. Thank you for leaving me your tackle box, and instructions for life. Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat forever. When fishing, you need to focus on a few things: The bait, the hook, the line, the rod, the cast, the wait, the catch, keep or release, and feast. I love you Earnest rest in Peace. I dont know if you went to heaven after hearing some of your stories, but Ill have a blade for you there as well grandad but it is for fishing only though! P.S. I can still hotwire a car, luckily I think I wont have to use that skill anytime soon.
