When friends or relatives heard we have three cats and five kittens at home, and the whole family is involved in taking care of them, their reactions were the same - why bother with stray animals, why took the trouble on yourselves, or havent you got better things to do? Well, we dont see it as a chore or a burden. We see it as a blessing to be able to take care of a few animals that some people just discarded away, considered them unworthy of love, or even another glance. To them, what is a lowly and dirty animal? But to us, each live is precious, be it that of a human or an animal. Nowadays, we see so little of humanity around us. We have so little patience, tolerance, or compassion for each other. I find this so frightening. We are more like robots moving around tall buildings, driving fast cars or donning flashy outfits. Yes, it calls for tolerance when you see a pile of smelly cat feces early in the morning on the floor of the living room. It calls for tolerance when you found your leather sofa scratched beyond recognition by itching claws. It calls for patience when your cats meowed endlessly at your elbow while you are busy preparing their food. It calls for patience when your nicely folded laundry got messed up by a pack of kittens who could not stay still for a second. It calls for compassion when you are down to your last dollar and your sick cat needs an urgent visit to the vet. It calls for compassion to share what little food you have on the table with eight other hungry souls. Everyday, we are trying to do that. Everyday, we are practicing patience, tolerance, and compassion because if we dont, we are going to lose them eventually. I dont want my children to grow up as successful individuals without a strand of humanity left in their veins. I would failed as a mother if that happened. I want them to know the suffering of others, to know the feeling of pain and hunger which can sometimes robbed one of common sense. To us, our cats and kittens are not merely pets. They are there for us to practice on. For this, it is only reasonable to take good care of them. We are grateful for their presence in our lives.
