When hairdressing becomes an attraction! Being a travel writer the main focus is on attractions. But what constitutes an attraction? Well, according to my school of thought a true attraction is something that stays with you in your memory and heart. It could be a worldwide acclaimed tourist sight, it could be that bowl of noodle soup which changed your perception on both noodles and soups, or it could be a daring encounter with an unknown - at least to you - hairdresser! The latter just materialized in to an attraction proper. For a quarter of the price I pay back home, I got a haircut (and survived the new look). But what made the real attraction was the 15-minute head massage prior to the hairdresser working the scissors. I didnt ask for it. I didnt expect it. But I did suspect that I would get charged on top - in the end. Certainly I would have been happy to pay a little extra for a massage so firm yet soothing, that I almost forgot about the need to have the hair cut. But after 45-minutes of carefully changing my hairdo only by using a pair of scissors, and a twin engine of blowdrying to make me look real suave, I was made to pay 15 USD. Then New York Studio Chiang Mai made my list of local attractions. They already have a great reputation amongst expat women in Chiang Mai. So despite years of really wacky hairstyles and unfortunate visits to local Thai hairdressers, Khun Gam and two of her employees at New York Hair Studio changed all of that. By the way I went next door afterwards to sample a light lunch, and wham bam thank you mam had a sushi roll called Tigers Eyes which is squid, salmon, crab stick and shiitake served with a chili dip. That somehow added to the hairdresser next door being a new attraction on the travel writers list.
