When incidents such as these take place, as have so many of late, there is a natural human response. This is revulsion at what has happened, a desire for revenge or severe punishment to be meted out to the perpetrator/s and a search for some way to prevent any repetition in future. But will revulsion help the next victim or victims of such a crime? Will revenge or punishment cause their fate to be avoided? Can there ever be enough people to monitor and guard against every person who might possibly commit such an act? In the Tom Cruise sci- fi film Minority Report, a system had been developed where all serious criminal activity could be predicted with unerring accuracy. So reliable was the information provided that every potential crime could be stopped well in advance of it being carried out. The result was a society where very few people were murdered, robbed or harmed in any way whatsoever. Could something comparable be created in this day and age? Is there a way of predicting events in future time and then enabling measures to counteract all behaviour considered injurious, unlawful, reprehensible and a stain on society in general? We cannot see into the future with any great accuracy but it may be possible to program some of it in such a manner that many of those in times to come could benefit greatly from just such a decision. laxiankey – programming tomorrow for results so much better than the ones expected.
