When it comes, it hardly knocks. If it knocks, you don’t have a choice but to allow it in. If you have a choice, it’s between now or now. Later is never an option. If later is an option, then it hasn’t come for you. For some, the coming is sudden and abrupt. For others, it’s gradual. If it takes the gradual route, some hosts give a fight. The rich bait it with their wealth, but it doesn’t fall. Those deceived by their worldly ‘power’ fire at all cylinders to send back this visitor. But all will be to no avail, because Allah has said of this visitor: “every soul shall have a taste of death and when the time comes, no one can postpone it”. Spiritual and, perhaps, philosophical. That’s how the touched waxes when a known person is hit by this guest – death. He reflects, realises the nothingness of this world and makes some personal commitment to make a detour to the path of good. The rhetorical question many usually ask is, “but why?”. The above was my mood when on 16th, July 2010, I received the striking news of the sudden exit of a friend and more innovative colleague who was said to have died two days earlier. His death came exactly two weeks after what was supposed to be his last paper in his first year in the University, not knowing it was going to be his last examination in that school. The last I saw him was on 30th, June 2010. In his usual friendly and humble manner, we exchanged pleasantries and he asked after my mum saying “Iya Ruka nko?”. He bade me goodbye and headed for the department. Little did I know that was going to be our last meeting. Oh tears… Segun Goodluck Alege, sun re ooo. abusgar.blog/2012/09/01/the-mild-but-tragic-blow-of-an-imposing-visitor/
