When it is said a lawyer is supposed to fight for his client, its a figure of speech. Seriously though, courts are so full of litigants that it is easy to forget the purpose of having them - to resolve disputes between parties. This lawyer refused to counsel his client to waive his right to a speedy trial. That right is one enshrined in our constitution. To be sure, the lawyer seemed contemptuous and likely ought to have been disciplined - but the Judge ought to be impeached. At the end, the client was left standing at the lectern alone facing setting a trial in front of a man that had just committed with impunity the same crime as the client. It matters who you elect as Judges, Prosecutors and Public Defenders. They can either work for us or they can get petty and fight each other over their own particular agendas. But no bench ought to be abandoned for a fight out back. And no client of the Public Defenders Office ought to be stranded alone to face the awesome power of the government - all because of personal matters that most professionals ought to be able to amicably resolve.
