When it was suggested that I do my own tribute to the wonderful - TopicsExpress

When it was suggested that I do my own tribute to the wonderful sculpture by Anthony Gormley called “The Angle of the North” I had a little problem finding out what would look best on my Gadgie that would represent the wings but at the same time tie in the working man and everything that he stood for. At first I did a sketch with the old fella with a couple of wooden palettes on his arms. Well, I don’t know if you’ve ever tried lifting one of those things but you wanted to lengthen your arms by a couple of feet…they weigh a ton. So the idea of my old gadgie with those either side of him just wasn’t going to work. As if by magic both my publisher and myself had the brainwave at the same time and we both said “how about a ladder”? This would fit in really well for I had spent a huge chunk of my working life as a ‘Vision Technician”..window cleaner and the ladders would be a good match to the length of the angels wings plus Peter my old long suffering model wouldn’t end up in an early grave trying to pose for me with a huge weight balanced in either arm. When I saw him standing there with an old wooden ladder behind his back I knew instantly that here we had a winning idea. I’m glad to say that it became a very successful print, sculpture both in resin, stainless steel and in bronze but we managed to create a life size sculpture that proudly is on show at the Metro Centre in Gateshead. I hope you enjoy the images that I’ve posted to show you how the sculpture was born.
