When my Mom was quite young, her parents purchased the hotel building in White Pine. They rented out most of the rooms long term. To quote Mama, Howard and Ruby set up housekeeping there and stayed until after their daughter was born. I was sent to Harrisons on the evening she was born so I wouldnt know what was happening. Babies being birthed at that time was held secret from young children. Mama also had interesting tidbits about some who began clandestine courtships there, but I wont divulge names. ;-) On occasion there were businessmen in the area who rented a room as a temporary hotel room. Since they had one of the very early radios, in the evening everyone would congregate in the parlor to listen. Mama would laugh and say it was odd that they all sat looking toward the radio while listening to the shows. One man who came into the area each month always stayed to listen until the radio signed off for the evening. At that time he would go up to the radio and look under, behind, and all around it. He muttered under his breath as he left the room, Ive seen it, Ive heard it, and I still dont believe it. Well, folks, I can relate to that fellow. There is much we have and take for granted in this technological world that I can hardly believe. I do wonder what changes are in store for the next 20 years.
