When my daughter Sydney Wood was a little girl, she asked for and got the Discovery Channel crime solving game. It came with cases, dossiers, evidence packets, a microscope, etc. She opened the first case, read the narrative and dossiers and sorted all of them out but one. Pulling the evidence packet, I asked her what she was doing. She said, This one did it. Now I just need to examine the evidence to prove it. As a young child she believed that the solution to the crime lied not in the physical evidence, but in the information and behaviors of those involved. Of course, many times this is exactly the case, as it was in that game she played. Here on FB I constantly see people searching for evidence to refute or support some claim, some religious faith, some political stance, or some internet meme. Every day we are faced with those who submit evidence and yet we are still unmoved because the narrative and the behaviors of those involved tell the story in a way that makes much more sense than what we can see in a microscope. It is my wish for you, my friend, that you always consider the source, always question and always leave room for error. It is my wish that you believe in humanity rather than society, faith or evidence put forth by those who would benefit from your trust. I learned this from my beautiful, intelligent daughter.
