When my daughter (now 23) was in elementary school, we got into - TopicsExpress

When my daughter (now 23) was in elementary school, we got into some huge arguments about calculators. She would whip one out to do her math homework, and I was flabbergasted. Thats like cheating! Not just cheating on her homework, but cheating herself out of one of the fundamental things everyone must learn in order to get along in life! She told me the teachers said it was okay, and thats why we argued. To me, it was not okay. I did not care what the teachers did in school, but in MY house, my child was going to have mathematics imprinted on her brain. No calculators!! Use your head!! Use your math skills!! I ended every argument by saying, If you dont learn this now, youre going to be in an lot of trouble later in life! Its not like youre going to carry a calculator everywhere you go! My daughter reminded me of my no-calculator rule tonight. As she held up her cell phone and smirked. Smirked.
