When my ex-wife comes over, she always “fixes” one thing in my apartment. Sometimes it’s putting the toilet paper on the roll, other times it’s straightening a picture that had just gone crooked minutes before she came in. Even if I have everything perfect before she comes in, she’ll find something amiss, like a leaf that had blown in or a piece of paper sticking out of a closed drawer. So now I try to have all my bases covered, except one thing that I’ll leave purposely and glaringly wrong, knowing she’ll go right for it. It worked the first time, when I left a dishwasher full of clean dishes just hanging open for her to see. While I pretended to be distracted elsewhere, I could hear the clink and swipe of glass and plastic going back into my cupboards. Id have to do better than that for next time. Dishes were put away, lamps were dusted, pictures hung just right, and the toilet paper was placed correctly on the roll (over the top, not underneath like she always does it). She walked in and was already doing her inspection. It was subtle, but I could tell that she was both impressed and itching to just mess with something. She was standing in the bedroom, hands on her hips and her back to me, when she finally caught on to what was different. “Pull your pants up yourself, Shaun,” she said.
