When my father finally managed to build our house, the one thing - TopicsExpress

When my father finally managed to build our house, the one thing that he made sure he had was a ground floor with a separate entrance that could be rented out for some extra income. And while ma often worried given that the Calcutta tenancy act was completely in favour of tenants, daddy was confident that no one would overstay his welcome, not with him around. In any case, the seven years that the flat was rented, both tenants became firm friends and moved on themselves. Now, twenty five years later, hes finally getting evicted. In our one week in Kolkata, Neel showed absolutely no interest in spending quality time with Vivek and me in the bedroom. Instead, he would head straight to the living room where ma and daddy would be sitting, with the nurses fussing around ma and watching Bengali soaps on television. In the beginning he would give his delighted grandpa an endearing smile and sit next to him. After that he would slowly stretch out his legs behind the Brigadier, and every time daddy got up for something, Neel would take a little more space. Inevitably, after about an hour, the sofa was all Neels with daddy forced to move to a chair. I still cant get over the look of betrayal on my fathers face!
