When my mom was here a few weekends ago visiting my brother Luke, she talked about someone she called the knocker, who knocks on her door (she lives in an old hotel converted to apartment housing for self-sufficient seniors), around 3 oclock every morning. We werent quite sure what to make of it. Crazy mom? Crazy neighbor? But then Luke told me this evening that it isnt just mom, that other tenants in the building are also complaining about it, and that its being taken so seriously that theyre considering putting up cameras or hiring someone to watch. But heres the thing: apparently theres at least some credibility being given to the notion that the knocker is, in fact, a ghost, and that the investigation being mounted is to explore that possibility. Creepy.
