When my oldest was in high school a gang of neighborhood girls in their early teens beat up the girl who lived on the corner. Her family was poor, her mother worked, no father, I happened to see the attack and ran to her rescue, scattering the bullies whose families all owned their homes and lived comfortable middle class lives.. I walked the girl home and spoke with her mother who was upset but felt powerless. The girl never spoke but slipped into her house like a shadow. I then spoke to the mother of one of the ringleaders of the attack and was told that the girl deserved it because she ran wild and because she called her daughter a name. I was dumbfounded. If you called me a name and lived without supervision , could I kick your ass whenever I pleased? Could I terrorize you and make every walk home from school a path of fear and torture? Livid, I did not wait for an answer. It was not long after that the girl and er mom moved away. And then my daughter became the target. Already coached on this possibility she put up with it for a while and then called out the ringleader and offer to punch out her lights. It stopped. When I see stories of police overstepping their authority, I think that they are acting out something that is present throughout our society, something that shocks many but also has the approval of many.
