When my son was in 2nd grade they wanted to slap this label on him. No diagnosis, no testing, no validation ... just label him and move on. I pushed back big time ... because I had, fortunate for him, some medical training and demanded testing and diagnostics. The testing by the school district was worse than a joke, it was incompetent. An educational specialist said he was functioning at 12th grade level on some measures. Yeah he is bright but give me break. Then the psychologist said he had ADHD because during her classroom observation of a writing assignment could not come up with a topic and had rejected her suggestion. That is not observation. That is gaming the outcome. Finally, finally we took him to a children educational center. The Dr. noted right off that there was no indication of the Hyper component. Then further actual testing demonstrated that he had problems focusing on tasks. Small doses of ADD meds were proscribed at first. They did help him. But as the doses and the particular meds were changed he began to exhibit symptoms such as excessive eye blinking. When I insisted that this was not normal and demonstrated that it went away when he was off the meds on the weekend did his gruesome ultra liberal doctor finally accept my observation. After years of on various meds and experimental doses my son decided he had had enough. He took himself off the meds and continues to do well in college. Be careful of the reflexive bureaucrats who want to drug your children to make their lives easier.
