When new shifts opened up at my workplace, I went for the - TopicsExpress

When new shifts opened up at my workplace, I went for the Tuesday-Sunday off schedule, planning to use the free weekday for job interviews and job fairs. But what I end up doing is just going to a movie -- just to get out of my apartment -- and then I end up walking out of it feeling cheated by all the contrivances and improbabilities presented manipulatively. But what else is there to do on a Tuesday afternoon, I wondered, and then something occurred to me. Ive never been much of a sports fan, but I considered that at least a game between teams or a match between combatants is real drama. But where am I going to find a sporting event on a Tuesday afternoon? Still I thought that maybe its time to catch up with the rest of world and start taking inspiration from athletics. Then later that day I came upon a book at the library called Wheelmen, about Lance Armstrong. I guess the title is supposed to be some kind of a pun, referencing the wheelman in a heist. Maybe thats just another of my silly assumptions but the book does discuss in detail Lance Armstrongs fraud as a sportsman. I then remembered one time in the summer of 2005 when I got an early start on the day and found myself having breakfast at a Central Austin restaurant. A wide-screen TV was up to show us Lance Armstrongs next win in the Tour de France. It seemed like a meaningful way to spend the morning instead of watching some dumb TV show or stuck in traffic with inane shock jocks. Or was it? We know now of course that I and the rest of that patio full of diners were just victims of a con artist. So how do we know if any match between two teams or two combatants isnt just as much of a ridiculous contrivance as a bad movie? This Tuesday though I have a job interview, so for one afternoon at least Ill be spending my free time wisely.
