When people are cremated, it isnt unusual for the body to sit up and move its limbs around. This is due to the shrinking of skin and tendons as they heat. I wonder if that has anything to do with the idea of zombies. I know vampires come from corpses filling with gas and settled blood (the gas would disturb the earth up top, so theyd dig up the body to find it bloated and flushed red, looking like it was bloated from drinking someones blood , they would assume the corpse had dug itself out, eaten someone, then returned to their nest/grave.)
