When putting there are different strokes that work for different folks so the key is to find a style that you are comfortable with and that gets the job done. Your putter is the most used but least practiced club in your bag but the easiest way to reduce your score by 10 shots so here are some tips to help you. Take dead aim as miss aligned putter face will mean you have to compensate during your stroke. Looking down your target line and picking an intermediate target closer to your ball like a blemish on the green will help to start putts online. Hold the putter in a way that allows you return the putter face squarely to your target and maximises feel as direction and distance are key to good putting. For longer putts a little wrist action may be required. Ensure your eyes are positioned over the ball or slightly inside and that your eyes and shoulders are parallel to the line of your putt. Control your stroke with the shoulders, hands and arms so they act as one unit with your hands and wrists quiet (except for long putts:). Keep your eyes and head still throughout the stroke as moving these will cause excessive body movement and inconsistencies. Make sure your stroke has an even length back and through and that it has a consistent tempo. Think about what you need to do in order to hole a putt and not about what you don’t want to happen like leaving a putt short/long or not 3 putting. Your mind controls your body so what is uppermost in your mind will encourage your body to do the same thing. Practice effectively by holing putts from close range to practice your aim and to build confidence. In addition, learn how to consistently strike several putts (without looking) over the same distance to build consistent benchmarks and develop a greater feel. Striking putts from sweet spot is a key element to controlling distance consistently and a good drill is to place 2 tees either side of your putter similar to tiger in this video. Note the length of strokes of Tiger and Rory in the video. Pace determines the line and will help you to get long range putts close to the hole for an easy tap in. For longer putts try to hit the putt dead weight as this allows the ball to drop from both sides of the cup and shorter putts should struck a little firmer to hold their line. I hope this helps and if you would like to improve your putting will focus on these points in my next practice session and class this Saturday.
