When some liberal Church folks are confronted with an appeal to sound Biblical doctrine, they often respond by piously intoning something like, We dont need doctrine we just need to love God and love people. But the LORD Jesus did not teach that loving God with all our heart soul mind and strength and loving our neighbour as ourselves is all we need do. The LORD quoted this as a summary of the Law, not as the means of reconciliation.This teaching does not excuse us from the gospel but drives us to it. For who ever in the sad history of humanity ever loved God with all their being or loved their neighbour as themselves. Not one, ever; except of course Christ Himself. And not only is it not the gospel, neither is it an excuse to abandon doctrine; for Who is this God we are to love so completely, what pleases Him and what incurs His anger. How are we to love Him and humans in a way that that is acceptable to Him? The moment we begin to attempt an answer to these questions, we are entering into the world of doctrine and theology. Loving God and loving people is not a catch all justification to reject doctrine but a sound reason to search the Scriptures daily to see if some things taught in a religious context are in fact so. John 7:16-17 Jesus answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.
