When someone asks you, how are you....do they truly care/want to - TopicsExpress

When someone asks you, how are you....do they truly care/want to hear your answer? How are you, for the most part, has become sort of just a polite greeting...the words themselves losing meaning.... Inevitably we reply, fine, thank you...how are you? With the same meaningless use of the words. Ive noticed this more and more...and have also noticed that the words really hold no value. Theyre just something to say in greeting. While polite and better than no words, it still strikes a rather sad and tell-tale chord...folks really dont care how one another is. Not really. Not deep down. Once here recently, to prove my observation as correct, when a grocery clerk asked me how are you today?, instead of me replying with my usual Im good...how about you?...I said, my back hurts, I have a sinus cold, I miss my brother and Im struggling with that, while trying to figure out which direction my life is headed. That lady just stood there looking at me like Id grown three heads (she was still rolling my groceries across the scanner...but had this blank look on her face). After 4 or 5 seconds, she replied oh. Of course she didnt give two thoughts to how I was really doing...and she proved by point. She (and all of us) have become accustomed to saying the words, but not MEANING them. (Yes. There are exceptions, but Im referring to the majority). Moral of the story? Politeness is great and appreciated, yet when we say something, mean the words spoken or dont say them.
