When someone famous attempts suicide many people on the web will - TopicsExpress

When someone famous attempts suicide many people on the web will come out with the he/she is a coward nonsense that drives me mental. But here we are now, a week and a half removed from the Robin Williams suicide, and talkbacks certainly dont look the same as it did when Artie Lange stabbed himself in the stomach nine times or Tony Scott jumped to his death. This week, what I mostly hear is depression is a crazy thing, and a very small minority expressing contempt for Williams. What Id like to know is, what changed so quickly? [First, I understand that there are those, like me, who have always believed that a person has the right to end their own life depending on the situation. I am not referring to you.] These are the possibilities I can come up with off of the top of my head: 1) People who would have criticized were suddenly placed in a different position when the suicidal person is someone to whom they have an emotional/nostalgic connection and therefor cannot bring themselves to condemn him. 2) People who would criticize are simply keeping their mouth shut because they know that Robin Williams meant a lot to a lot of people. 3) The world has suddenly become far more understanding of depression in the past couple of years (even if this is true to some extant, I highly doubt awareness has raised by the 800% that web comments would indicate). 4) The confusion about someone as seemingly happy as Williams committing suicide has caused people to look for answers based on reality instead of voicing a gut reaction. Thoughts?
