When students say: I dont know how, teachers hear: 1. Do it for me. 2. I wasnt listening when you walked us through the instructions step by step. 3. I wasnt listening when you walked us through the instructions step by step a second and third time. 4. I didnt pay attention to the examples you created right in front of the whole class, either. 4. I was listening, but its not worth my time. 5. I could figure it out on my own, but that takes effort. (followed by #1). 6. Youre my personal tutor, right? 7. What other students in the class? 8. I have every intention of having someone else write this paper for me, and Im mistakenly confident you wont put two and two together that the student who just admitted to willful ignorance has turned in an A paper. 9. Yes, Ive been on Facebook this whole time. 10. I really dont care and youre a waste of my time. Remember that, students, the next time a flippant I dont know how, comes out of your mouth without thinking.
