When the 1960s rolled around, Skeeter Davis (nee Mary Penick) was a young (29-year old) veteran of the country music scene. She had first hit the national music scene in 1953 as one-half of the country duo The Davis Sisters with Betty Jack Davis, although they were not sisters or even related. This duo had a huge hit with the song Ive Forgotten More Than Youll Ever Know which topped the country chart and even made the Top 20 of the pop chart. However in August of 1953, the duo was involved in a serious car accident that killed Betty Jack and seriously injured Skeeter. After recovering, Skeeter and Betty Jacks sister, Georgia, attempted to keep the duo going but had no further hits. Skeeter left the bidness, got married, then came back as a solo country act, having a few hits. In 1960, she hit the pop chart for the first time as a solo act with (I Cant Help You) Im Falling Too and answer to Hank Locklins country hit Please Help Me Im Falling. The next year she had another song enter the pop chart with My Last Date (With You) a rendition of Floyd Cramers Last Date, lyrics written by Ms. Davis. In 1963, she had what would be the biggest hit of her career with the Arthur Kent/Sylvia Dee penned End of the World. The song was #1 on the Easy Listening chart, #4 on the R&B chart, #2 on both the country and pop chart and #18 on the UK pop chart. It is to date, according to our friends at wiki, the only time a song has cracked the top 10 on all 4 Billboard charts. Ms Davis had a couple of other songs hit the pop charts but went on to have a long and successful career as a country singer, was married for a time to WSM personality Ralph Emery. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 72.
