When the Program Director mailed me, for the umpteenth time, - TopicsExpress

When the Program Director mailed me, for the umpteenth time, requesting for my dissertation abstract, i did the sign of the cross as i typed my idea in the mail. I sent the mail with mixed feelings: I had doubts and still i hoped for a miracle. My phone rang a few minutes after. Its the Director. Good evening, Mr. Owoyemi. his husky voice comes on strong. A strange fear fills me and makes my finger tips. I grip the phone firmly as he reels on: You say you want to write a novel length narrative as your dissertation. He coughed. I answered in the affirmative. A novel that interfaces law and medicine, right? Yes sir, He clears his throat and begins: As brilliant and noble as the idea is, Im sorry i cant let you do that. He talks about how the countrys educational system is messed up and will not consume such an creative work on an intellectual field like medicine. He encourages me to dig deep and think. You are in your peak period. In America, your age is when students are deemed to churn out their best works. Dont let the Nigerian system deceive you. Dont let it ruin you. Think global. Compete. Tick-tock-tick-tick Thats the clock, right? No, it isnt just the restless hands of the clock. It is the sound of your life. One tick at a time, we tock-away. Life is fleeting, 100years is too short when measured against the enormity of time. This is the war Im not sure Im winning.
