When the Soviet Union broke up, it was either by popular movements - TopicsExpress

When the Soviet Union broke up, it was either by popular movements (Baltic, Caucasus) or by accident (most of the rest), knowing that the Soviet Union was crumbling, the constituent states simply decided that independence was for the best. However, the Russian Civil War gives us a good insight into a prefiguration of all this, because the Bolsheviks were defeated by Finland, Poland and the three Baltic states to secure their respective independence. Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus and Central Asia werent so lucky. The key thing to remember is that the White Russian movement, monarchists and all, were technically on the same side as the newly-independent states and independence movements. It was a prefiguration of the Cold War with a shared opposition to Communism.
